All of a sudden for no apparent reason, my bosses 'My Documents' folder (and all files and folders inside) now has two little blue arrows at the bottom left of the icon & every file/folder inside. My research keeps pointing me in the direction of outlook. Something to do with making files available offline and synchronization, but Im not sure if Im even on the right track. So Ive decided to spend the money and trust in experts exchange.
Lets see if its as good as I hope it is. Thanks in [email protected] heres exactly what happened, although most of this is probably irrelevant.Bosses hard drive starts ticking yesterday morning. Not too big of a deal because her 'My Documents' folder is stored on our server. So all I had to do after buying a new drive and installing XP Pro was to right-click the local 'My Documents' folder and point it to the one on the server. Peace of cake as Im sure you know.
When i did it, I honestly cant remember if the blue arrows were on all the icons immediately, she brought it to my attention this morning so Im doing my best to get rid of them.System is using Windows XP Pro with Microsoft Office 2003. Yes dukeboy, you are correct. This computer has now been enabled for offline use, and the icons are indicating which files are available. Here is some help from Outlook Help screen:If you have set up Microsoft Outlook to work offline (offline: In reference to one or more computers, not being connected to a network.), you can delete all items (item: An item is the basic element that holds information in Outlook (similar to a file in other programs). Items include e-mail messages, appointments, contacts, tasks, journal entries, notes, posted items, and documents.) from the Offline Folder file (.ost) (Offline Folder file: The file on your hard disk that contains offline folders. The offline folder file has an.ost extension. You can create it automatically when you set up Outlook or when you first make a folder available offline.).
However, this procedure does not delete items saved on the server. In Mail, in the Navigation Pane, right-click Inbox, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu.On the General tab, click Clear Offline Items.NotesTo delete an item from both the online and offline folders, select the item, and then press Delete. If you are using a Microsoft Exchange Server e-mail account in Cached Exchange mode, only the selected folder will be cleared from the local Offline Folder file (.ost). The items on the server will be downloaded again to the.ost file on the next synchornization if the folder is selected under Folder Options in Send/Receive Settings for the Exchange account. Thanks so much for the reply, but the only thing that seems to be an actual step I can take towards resolving the issue is right-clicking the inbox, going to properties, and unchecking that box that doesnt even exist. Am I doing something wrong? There is nothing under the general tab in properties that says 'Clear Offline Files'. Very strange. Also, if the computer has been enabled for offline, how come its just her 'My Documents' folder and everything in it that has the arrows?
(are offline) Does XP have some kind of default setting where if files are restored from a network those files are automatically enabled for offline use? Yep thats definetly the spot. However it seems to me that by enabling this option, it would make all files available offline. In my case, it was just the 'my documents' folder.

Is that the only folder it enables? I wont be able to check my bosses computer and actually see if she enabled offline viewing in folder options until monday, but Im 99% sure she didnt and no one else could have. Which is weird one day after a new OS install. Let me post how I resolved the issue. It may help one of you reading this in the future. I went to the server, copied her 'my documents' folder, pasted it somewhere else, deleted the original, and pointed her computer to the new one.
No more arrows, everything works fine. Probably not the most accurate solution but until Im convinced that the 'my documents' folder is the only folder that becomes available offline OR there is a way to choose which folders you want to make available offline. Look forward to hearing a response, and for anyone deciding whether or not to join this site, you cant go wrong.
We all have pet peeves. Some are rational, others may appear irrational to others. I am not sure where this registry trick falls into, but shortcut arrows on the desktop drive me crazy. There is just something about making an otherwise nice desktop icon busier with those arrow overlays. This easy step by step guide shows you how to get rid of them! What arrows? In case you do not know what I am referring to let me explain. Since the days of Windows 95 whenever you placed a shortcut on the desktop for app or document, an arrow is placed on the lower corner of the icon.
I get why it is there, at least for documents (you do not want to delete the original), but I think it makes less sense for apps. We just do not install apps to the desktop, so I am unsure why I need to be reminded 'hey, this is a shortcut, not the real app'. Also since the days of Windows 95 there have been third-party apps to get rid of these arrows. Is no different.
Due to security reasons, we are not posting or linking some home-made.exe files that people have created to automate this task. There are some apps likes, which I really like, that can do this and other things, in case you are interested.Instead, we are going to show you how to do it the nitty gritty way through the registry. Truth be told, it is super simple and should take no more than 5 minutes.Still, you are touching the registry so make sure you have backed up your PC just in case if you feel uncomfortable. This new icon overlay seems to pop up fairly randomly. I’m guessing it’s not a bug, and that it really is displaying compression status of the file in some way, but it has some odd and inconsistent behavior when applied to shortcuts which lead to, well, situations like thiscompression icon overlay windows 10Method 2:-This case is called compressing of files, if your disk has no space Windows will automatically do this compression. What you're doing is just covering up the icons rather than releasing space.Step 1 - Release some space. Delete unnecessary files, release up to 1-3 Gb.Step 2 - if the whole desktop has double arrows, simply select all.
If not, choose the specific folderStep 3 - Right click then select properties then advanced.Step 4 - Uncheck 'Compress contents to save disk space'.This also should solve the problem.-I just clean installed Windows 10 1511 and I’ve only gotten a few applications installed. If the app gives you a choice, I point them to install on my second hard drive rather than the small SSD I run Windows from, so nearly all the app shortcuts point to the same place, yet VMWare and the Adobe applications on my taskbar have this compressed overlay while FileZilla and WinRAR don’t despite them being in the same compressed directory, all right alongside each other. Why? I have no idea, but it’s really annoying. Plus, even if this odd shortcut behavior was fixed, I still wouldn’t want to see these icons. If I wanted an indication of compressed files I’d probably have already changed their label text colour.I Google’d the issue a bit, figuring someone would’ve packaged up a solution by now. I found lots of people talking about it, but no actual answers beyond “decompress those files”.
